The Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) was established as a collaboration between ETH Zurich and Singapore’s National Research Foundation. It is the hub of ETH Zurich’s strong presence in Southeast Asia. Singapore is an attractive city regularly ranked highest for quality of living in Asia. Our project from the Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication at ETH Zurich investigates robotic fabrication processes for building construction. In particular, we work on solving fundamental problems of high precision mobile assembly tasks with the goal to realize the world’s first autonomous construction robots that build on site. Mechatronic Design Engineer (Robotics)
You will be responsible for devising, designing and building innovative mechatronic solutions for several sub-problems of a construction process. This will involve collaborating with civil or materials engineers to optimize materials for an automated process and acquiring the necessary domain knowledge. Furthermore, you will design and integrate the next iteration of the robot based on the current prototype. Later objectives might include: designing the next prototype generation of the robot from the ground up designing a custom mobile base drive system optimized for construction site conditions or designing a custom articulated robot with application-specific kinematics (e.g. based on force-controlled hydraulic actuators). This is a full-time position with an initial contract for 12-18 months and potential for extension.
You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, ME or a related discipline and ideally a few years of industrial experience. You should have strong expertise in mechanical/mechatronic design of mechanisms and machines, preferably with experience in robotics. Solid understanding of kinematics, dynamics and stress mechanics is essential. You should be able to independently progress through ideation, conceptual design, choice of optimal actuation principle, actuator dimensioning, part sourcing, GD&T, CAD modeling and drafting, FEA, fabrication and assembly, integration of control electronics and embedded software/drivers, testing and troubleshooting. Prior experience in/with one or more of the following is considered a plus: design for harsh environments rheology, particularly in relation to material dispensing some training or work experience as industrial automation technician kinematic manipulator design or drive system design for mobile bases design and ideally control of hydraulic systems manufacturing, supply chain and QA Python, C++, ROS, Gazebo, Qt, Git.
You have a demonstrated track record of building actual working systems and are driven to bring a concept through prototypes to a deployed product. You welcome switching between research, HW/SW development, hands-on work and extensive, oftentimes dirty testing in the lab and on site. As a self-starter and creative problem solver you take on whatever needs to be done.
